The Rhode Island trademark search is used to look up marks by name, description, registration number, registrant name, or date range. A “mark” can be a trademark to identify goods or a service mark identify services.[1]
According to state law, marks are valid for 10 years from the registration date, and the registrant can continue to renew in 10-year increments as long as a renewal application is submitted within six months of the expiration date.[2]
Trademark Search
1. Go to the “Trademark Search” Page
2. Select Search Option
The RI business portal provides a trademark search database with the following search parameters:
- Registration Number
- Trademark/Servicemark Name
- Mark Description
- Registrant (Name)
To narrow the search, enter a date range or specify the search type (“contains anywhere” or “begins with”) or transaction type.
3. Search Database
To generate a wide range of results, this guide will use the Mark Description option with the “contains anywhere” search type selected. Enter the mark description (and any other desired search parameters) into the appropriate field and click the Search button.
4. Review Results
After clicking Search, a list of trademarks/servicemarks will appear alphabetically by their descriptions. Each row contains the mark’s original number, registration date, registrant name, and finally the description.
For more information on a particular mark, click on the corresponding registration number in the far left column.
5. Inspect Registration Information
After clicking on a registration number, the registration information page will list the following details about the mark:
- Registration number
- Registration and expiration dates
- Registrant name
- Business name (if different than registrant)
- Address
- Applicant type
- State/country of organization
- Mark description
- Goods/services description
- Class number
- Date of first use
- Registration history information
