The Louisiana business filings search supports searches by entity name, officer or agent name, and charter, trade registration, or name reservation number. In addition to trademarks and service marks, the tool can be used to research entity names and DBAs, which are known as “trade names” in Louisiana.
Trademark, service mark, and trade name registrations are effective for 10 years.[1] Before registering, applicants must check the availability of the mark or name with the Secretary of State.[2] The mark or name must also be eligible for registration under Louisiana law.[3]
Trademark Search
1. Go to the “Business Filings Search” Page
2. Select a Search Type
Select one of the following search type options:
- Search by Entity Name
- Charter Number, Trade Registration Number, or Name Reservation Number
- Officer Name or Agent Name
For demonstration purposes, we’ll use Search by Entity Name to see whether a specific mark or trade name has already been registered.
3. Run a Search
Enter the mark or trade name into the Entity Name field. Then, click Search to access the results.
4. Browse the Results
Once the search is complete, matching marks, trade names, and business entities will be displayed.
Browse the results until the desired mark or trade name is found. More information about a particular mark/name can be viewed by selecting the Details button in the far-right column.
5. Inspect Details Page
The details page will display the following information about the selected mark or trade name:
- Mark type
- Registered name
- Applicant name and address
- Business type
- Book number
- Current status
- Inactive reason, if applicable
- Registration and expiration dates
- First use dates in Louisiana and elsewhere
- Class information
- Group information
