The Connecticut trademark search function is provided on the business.ct.gov website to research trade and service marks registered with the CT Secretary of State. The portal only displays those marks registered on a state level. Federally-registered trademarks must be researched through the USPTO website.
A “mark” is defined as any trademark (distinguishes goods) and service mark (distinguishes services) that is eligible for registration with the Secretary of State, whether registered or not.[1]
Trademark Search
1. Go to “Trade and Service Mark Records Search” Page
2. Enter Search Details
Searches can be performed by entering any of the following into the search field:
- The owner’s name
- A registration #
- A keyword
- A trademark or service mark description
If searching for the availability of a trademark, search by keyword or mark description. A mark cannot be registered if it could potentially be confused with a Connecticut-registered mark or a mark or trade name in use in Connecticut.[2]
3. Review Results Found
The following page will display all marks that match the search data entered on the homepage. Selecting a filter (see image) will help narrow results. The arrow at the bottom-right corner of each result (see image) can be used to review the Description of Mark and Registration date (see image).
To view more mark details, click anywhere else inside the white rectangle.
5. Review Mark Info, History, and Filing History
If the Mark Information arrow was selected, click the + button to view General Information about the mark. Users also have the option to view the Owner Information (see image).
Clicking View mark (see image) in the Mark History window will present an image of the mark in another tab. The Filing History window will present the filing date and registration number.
6. Review General Information
If the General Information window was expanded, users will be able to see the following data:
