Massachusetts Trademark Search | Secretary of State

The Massachusetts trademark search can look up trademark and service mark information and filings in the Secretary of State’s records. Users can search by date range, mark name, registration number, description, or registrant name. If a mark meets statutory requirements for registrability, an application can be filed with the Secretary of State to register it for a 5-year term.[1][2]

Trademark Search

1. Go to the “Search for Trademarks” Page

2. Choose What to Search By

Select one of the following Search by options to indicate the type of information that will be entered into the search tool:

  • Registration No.
  • Trademark / Servicemark
  • Mark description
  • Registrant

We used the Trademark / Servicemark option for this tutorial, which allows us to search for marks by name.

3. Enter Search Information

Use the empty field below Search by to enter the mark details. If the mark’s original registration date is known, the Date from and Date to fields can be used to search only for marks from a specific registration date range.

Click Search to submit the information and open the results page.

Search Filters – Two options are available to filter search results:

  • Search Type – Filters marks by whether they contain or begin with the search term.
  • Transaction Type – Filters results based on the selected transaction type.

4. Find the Trademark

After submitting the search, matching mark records will appear on the results page. Each record shows the original registration number, registration date, registrant name, and trademark or service mark name.

Look through the list of results until the desired mark is found, then click the original number on the left to view a detailed report for the selection.
