The South Dakota trademark search platform contains the entire database of trademarks and service marks that have been registered by business entities with the Secretary of State. The registration of trademarks (goods) and service marks (services) is valid for four years.[1]
Within six months of the expiration date, a mark’s registration can be renewed for another four years at the cost of $125, and every four years thereafter under the same conditions.[2]
Trademark Search
1. Go to the “Trademark Search” Page
2. Search by Name
To find trademarks and service marks by name, type the keyword into the Search Name text box. Select the Starts With button to find names that start with that keyword, or select Contains to get all results that contain the keyword that was provided. Then click Search.
3. Search by ID
When the ID number of the mark is already known, enter the number into the Trademark ID text box and click Search.
4. Check Trademark Entries
After a name or ID search has been conducted, all the trademarks and service marks that apply to the search parameters will be displayed on the screen. The entries are in ascending chronological order by mark ID number and also contain the following details:
- Mark name
- Owner name
- Mark class
- Filing date
- Status
- Expiration date
5. Review Trademark Details
To review a specific trademark from the list of entries, click on that mark’s ID number in the far left column. This will bring up details of the mark, including the following info:
- Trademark ID
- Mark name
- Status
- Class
- Initial filing date
- Expiration date
- Trademark thumbnail
- Business ID
- Owner name
- Owner physical address
- Owner mailing address
- Document filing history
